Perseverance and my Thanksgiving Toast to This

So many Thanksgivings go by, where I never really truly consider my blessings.  The older I become, the more I appreciate this holiday and its time-honored traditions.  It is for setting aside time for families, friends and loved ones, so that we can come together and give thanks.

There is something about Thanksgiving that I’ve come to appreciate.  While I love Christmas, and obviously it’s meaning, so many times it becomes completely cluttered with the ‘happenings,’ shopping and gifts, that the chaos overwhelms most of the season, having only – at the last minute – time to reflect on what truly is important during the holidays.

So as I get older, at the ripe old age of 29, I have come to realize the value of Thanksgiving, and fear that I have overlooked its importance until now.

I have many things in which to be thankful for this year, but I will spare you the laundry list of items and narrow it down to one main gratitude – and I’m sorry to disappoint – it’s very unoriginal.  I am thankful for perseverance, which ultimately brings me to being thankful for … and here’s the unoriginality… my family.

I have been blessed with my family who has taught me so many valuable lessons in life, and I now know that you are never too old to learn, or to be reminded of where you come from.  For me, recently, it has been a week of reminiscing with my wonderful family, remembering times, and learning of times before me, which I will keep with me and treasure, and hold with me to remember when I am faced with tough decisions.  The answer will always be – perseverance.  You can never go wrong with that, and you will never fail to be rewarded for that.  Life’s lesson, via Paw Paw, is perseverance, and he is my prime example in this.

This past week of reminiscing has me considering that if it weren’t for my parents, and their parents and the major influences they have been to me, that I could have easily turned out differently, and that some were not as fortunate as I have been, through no efforts of my own.  It was a lucky blessing for me.

I was fortunate enough to have been blessed with a family who values hard work, love and education – the cornerstones to a successful, happy lifestyle, and this has left its impression on me.

Perseverance.  The word seems simple enough, but the concept is a life-learned skill, and comes with much practice.  It applies to everything in life, but only when you’re struggling and working diligently towards your goals.

This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for that one word.  This one word – perseverance - led to a multitude of dynamic stories, with my Paw Paw taking lead as the comedic narrator, sharing them with much laughter and many tears. Perseverance allowed me to learn a side of my Paw Paw that would have remained secret to me.

After reminiscing about my hoity toity high school days where I turned my nose up at working at my parents Sonics during my senior year of high school, we shared a good laugh.  Ms. Thing over here didn’t mind slumming it during the summer, but the school year was not meant for delivering food, taking orders, earning tips, and taking out the trash - or was it?  What’s a 17-year-old know anyhow?

After a good laugh while reminiscing Paw Paw asked, “It’s not beneath you now, is it?”

Me humbly responding, “No Paw Paw.  It’s not.”

Perseverance.  Laughter.  Tears.  Pride.  Hard work.  Family.  Love.  Shared moments and forged memories.  Growing up.  Lessons finally sinking in.

Perseverance is a result of hard work, which leads to pride, and in turn becomes prosperity.

But even with prosperity, you still are never too good for delivering goods, taking orders, learning/earning tips and taking out the trash.

Again, “No Paw Paw.  It’s not.”

Next Bachelorette Season - Ooh la la

For those of you who know me, you know that I'm not a big fan of reality TV, but I think I'm going to make an exception for Season 7 of The Bachelorette.  This next season will spotlight a guy from my hometown of Lake Charles- Ben Castoriano.  The shy boy who graduated high school with me in the class of 2000 is going to star on the next season of The Bachelorette.  Crazy what a small world it is!

I can't wait to see how much the shy boy in my Sophomore English class has changed.  Here's a shout out to a Louisiana local.

Twenty to the Nines

So... as I'm approaching my last year in my 20 somethings, and have already started the obligatory family celebrations, in what has become to be known as "my birthday month," I wonder if I'm really where I always expected myself to be at the age of 29. But even if I'm not where I always projected I would be, I wonder, more importantly, if I did all of the irresponsible and fun things everyone is supposed to do in her youth.  Is it time for me to have a third life crisis wondering, "What have I done with my twenties?"

So I've decided that my last year in my twenties should go out with a bang.  What better way to do this than to create a bucket list for the last year of my youth?  So here goes.

Twenty to the Nines
  1. Travel with friends.
  2. Become fabulous and fashionable.
  3. Take a photography class and actually post decent pictures on my blog.
  4. Take a risk.
  5. Fall in love.
  6. Live healthy.
  7. Do something that terrifies me like skydiving or some other crazy stunt.
  8. Turn Sassy-Fras into my wonderful dream.
  9. Learn Italian - meeting a hot, Italian instructor wouldn't hurt either.  And actually use this skill in Italy.
  10. Perfect playing Fur Elise on my keyboard.
  11. Continue to surround myself with fabulous friends.
  12. Read and write - my two loves.
  13. Learn to cook a culinary masterpiece - or at least learn to cook.
  14. Master yoga and meditation.
  15. Volunteer.
  16. Live spontaneously.
  17. Do something completely irresponsible just for the hell of it.  I only have one more year to blame it on my twenties.
  18. Live green, or at least be more eco-friendly.
  19. Flip a coin and decide whether to drive East or West and just go.
  20. Buy something completely indulgent, just for me.  Something I don't even need, but just love.
I better get started.

Valentine's Day Intoxicated Intervention

Happy Heart's Day to all the single ladies out there who may, like me, pretend that today is completely overated hype, created only for those happy couples who share the same side of the booth (gag). You know who I'm talking about, ladies. Alas, I never understood that, but I digress - to each her own.

Who thought being shot by Cupid's arrow was such a genius idea anyway?

So in lieu of celebrating Valentine's Day, I was planning on going all Bridget Jones, watching depressing Lifetime movies dramatically titled Black Widow or some other nonsense, pretending not to be sulking about an uneventful Valentine's Day. But today did not go as planned, or unplanned, thanks to my best friends Cammi & Crystal, who are my Sassy Valentines. Y'all rock for posing a Valentine's Day intervention, getting me out of my Bridget Jones' - whipped cream being eaten straight from the can - state; however, I will take Colin Firth pretty please, and thank you very much.  Cupid can you help me out with that one?

Crystal, thanks for supporting my alcoholic habit, providing me with the cutest Valentine's Day wine glass. I had to drink a glass ... okay a bottle, of Red this evening in support of the arts - of course. So cheers to the arts & to http://www.sunnybelle.com/

And cheers to my good friend Cammi who also surpised me with a Valentine's happy.  What girl can resist chocolates?  I have such fantabulous friends!!!

So for those of you hiding out 'til tomorrow, pop open a bottle of Red or White, and enjoy the day for yourself.

Cheers to my Sassy ladies who always know how to make my day a little brighter and more intoxicated, but at least it's in high style.

Sassy Shout Out! & Breaking Dawn Update

Cheers to never having a dull moment, when it comes to hanging out with my ladies at lunch.  This is a shout out to my good friends Rhonda and Jodi, who guarantee that our lunch hour never fails to be one, big adventure.

So, as many of you know, Breaking Dawn is being filmed in my hometown, Baton Rouge, and even more amazingly, it's being filmed downtown where I work.  So you can guess what my friends and I do on our lunchbreaks - exactly what any other sane person would do - stalk empty sets taking pictures; getting cornered by security from both the capitol and the set, because we are walking around a closed set; and driving around and around Arsenal Park asking random people if they've seen vampires and werewolves.  This is normal behavior, right?  I'm sticking with yes.

Today was an adventure more than most.  My ladies and I thought we had found a fellow Twilight fanatic, who was even crazier than we are, because he had a video camera.  Yay!  Gotta love a little crazy.  But... it never fails that an adventure is soon to be had.  The guy actually had a reason to have a video camera - it's his job.  After very little peer pressure, my good friend Rhonda - hardcore Edward fanatic - is convinced to participate in an inpromptu interview, fully clad with her binoculars.  What, that's normal too, right?  We had to be sure that we would see Edward, even though I heart Carlisle.  But I digress.

I think the news goes out of it's way to find the craziest Louisianians - those who are missing teeth, riding in perots with the crazy eye; those with a very sad excuse for a vocabulary; and those who are crazy, binocular carrying vampire stalkers.  Okay, I'm sad to say that we are now added to this horrible stereotype, and it's recorded for people's viewing pleasure.  I think I'm safe though.  I am seated in the backseat of the car during the interview, so you never catch a glimpse of me.  Phew...  I never do well on the news.  I'm way too nervous of a person.

Check out the adventure below:

Cheers to my Sassy friends, Rhonda and to Jodi - who was blamed in the interview for bringing the binoculars - that lying Rhonda.  She is my type of sassy.  To all the sassy ladies!

All Things Pretty

What better way to initiate a blog than to talk about what makes me feel, live and breathe pretty?  I can't think of any.

It is in every woman the need to feel beautiful, in your own way - in whatever sense of the word that means to you.  To some, that may mean spending hours in a spin class or counting calories.  To others it may mean buying something beautiful or pampering yourself.  And still, to some it may mean doing a kind act - creating a more intrinsic beauty.

To me, I think it's a combination of both physical items and actions as well as moral aptitude that elude a sense of beauty.

Let's get rid of all the stigmas that surround beauty, for the moment.  Everyone has something that she can be proud of, and to me, this is beautiful.  Whether you have pearly whites and a big heart or beautiful skin and a vibrant personality, each person is beautiful in his or her own way, and I want to make this point clear at the beginning of my blogging journey.  Own your own "beautiful;" live your own "beautiful;" and portray your own "beautiful."

Pampering is a great way to live your own "beautiful."  I believe that there is no such thing as too much pampering, and this is something that everyone can do to feel relaxed, healthy and gleaming, with minimal effort.  This is the reason that Sassy-Fras is so important to me.  It helps me feel polished and makes me hold my head up a little higher, with a smile on my face, because Sassy-Fras is not just a product - it's an attitude.  These bath creations I have made, help me relax into the evening, only to wake up to be my shining, sassy self the next day.  It's my way of "beautiful", and I own it with that much more confidence.

So ladies and gentlemen, sit back, relax and get ready to live beautiful on the inside out.

Happy Pampering with Sassy-Fras & All Things Pretty!
